OTT Innovation!
Series quality thanks to new manufacturing technology
We have previously worked on developing a globoid worm gear and its associated series production. Until now, technical limitations have been the limiting factor.
Now we have made a fresh attempt and…
After two years of intensive production trials, tailored to the requirements of a customer inquiry, we have succeeded, thanks to state-of-the-art manufacturing processes, in producing a spur gear globoid worm gear (SG gear) with the desired OTT quality, reliably, and at attractive costs. The foundation for this breakthrough was Ott Engineering, the Ott manufacturing system, and our many years of expertise. Furthermore, alternative measurement methods had to be developed. With success! The single-flank rolling test as part of quality control shows convincing results.
A true breakthrough and an innovation in the field of drive technology.
Nothing now stands in the way of series production.
In cooperation with Ruhr University Bochum, the gearbox is now being further developed. Additional tests on specially developed test benches complement the scientific analysis of OTT’s spur gear-globoid worm gearbox.
The new SG-Gear is impressive:
Our globoid worm enables maximum torque transmission with minimal installation space – ideal for high-performance drives and in the usual OTT quality.

In spur wheel-globoid worm gearboxes, a helical spur gear is combined with a globoid worm. The cylindrical gear can be manufactured conventionally and tolerates axial displacements, while the worm is more complex to produce. The contact lines run from the tooth tip to the tooth root and move towards the tooth center during engagement; many teeth are engaged simultaneously. Software generates the worm geometry and models suitable spur gears, including variable tooth thickness distribution.
Technical specifications:

Manufacturing
Spur wheel-globoid worm gear
Spur wheel-globoid worm gears were initially mostly shelled, which hampered their widespread use due to the complex manufacturing process. Later, with the help of precise CAD models, small batches could be produced on universal milling machines using ball end mills. This was an expensive and time-consuming process. Furthermore, a cold forming process was developed for larger production runs of small drives. These drives typically used plastic worm gears.
OTT Gear Manufacturing has now achieved a breakthrough.
The door to series production at attractive prices has been opened.
